Background and Aim: Poor balance is one of the risk factors of falling, injury and even death of elderly. Since disorders in neuromuscular performance and imbalance are the main cause of falling among the elderly, its rehabilitation and balance are the main concern of the researchers. The present study was performed with aim to compare the effects of two kinds of tutorial gait approach on the balance and motor performance of elderly women at risk of falling.
Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental (interventional) study was performed with pre-test and post-test on 45 women aged 60-75 years old in Ghochan in 2019. They were randomly divided into three groups: the Tandem Gait training(n=15), gait on a horizontal ladder training(n=15), and control groups(n=15). The experimental groups participated for six weeks in the Tandem Gait and gait on a horizontal ladder trainings. The control group did their daily activities during the project. Before and after the six weeks of training, Berg Balance Scale (Static balance) 10 meter walk test (motor performance) were given. Paired t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data, SPSS statistical package was used for all analyzes. In this study, significance level equal was considered to 95% and level of alpha was considered less than or equal to 0/05.
Results: The findings of this study showed that both Tandem Gait and gait on a horizontal ladder trainings led to a significant improvement in the Static balance and motor performance in elderly women. Furthermore, Tandem Gait trainings was more affective on the Static balance and gait on a horizontal ladder trainings on motor performance(P≤0.05).
Conclusion: According to this study, doing the exercises in two kinds of tutorial gait approach is effective on improving the static balance and motor performance of old people and reducing their risk of falling.
