Background and Aim: Decreased balance in the elderly is associated with an increase in the rate of falls in these people. Thus, an annual decline is recorded for the elderly over 65 years. The present study aimed to evaluate The effect of combining Cawthorne-Cooksey and Frankel exercises on functional balance and Probability of falling in the elderly people with a history of falls.
Materials and Methods: The subjects included the elderly living in day care centers in Rasht. Among them, 28 elderly men and women with a history of falls participated voluntarily according to the entry and exit criteria and were randomly divided into two groups: experimental (14 people) and control group (14 people). The experimental group performed the combined Cawthorne-Cooksey and Frankel exercises for six weeks, three sessions per week and each session for 60 minutes. The berg test was used to evaluate the functional balance and the timed up and go test was used for the probability of falling. From paired t test for intragroup comparison and from analysis of covariance for comparison It was used between groups. Statistical analysis of data was performed using SPSS 26 software at a significance level of α= 0.05.
Results: The results of paired t-test showed that the performance balance scores (p = 0.007) and the probability of falling (p = 0.001) of the experimental group improved after the exercise program, while these scores did not show improvement in the control group. Also, the results of analysis of covariance showed that the two groups, experimental and control, after training were significantly different in performance balance and probability of fall
Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, the combination of Cawthorne-Cooksey and Frankel exercises can have a positive effect on functional balance and the probability of falls in the elderly with a history of falls. These exercises have a effect on the vestibular system and vision, so these exercises can also be used to improve balance in the elderly with defects in the atrial and visual systems.
