Background and Aims: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common chronic metabolic diseases and one of the major public health concerns in the world. Impaired glucose metabolism due to diabetes can greatly affect the physiology of the inner ear in the auditory and vestibular parts. Vestibular defect is a common pathology in DM, which is caused by the effects of microangiopathy and consequently symmetrical distal sensory polyneuropathy, so, it causes ischemia of the vestibular structures as well as changes in the metabolism of the inner ear fluids. The purpose of this study was to review the studies that have evaluated the clinical tests on the vestibular system including VEMP, SVV, vHIT, and caloric test in diabetic patients in order to summarize their results for a given brief view the effect of DM on the vestibular system.
Materials and Methods: In this review, the results of papers presented in Google Scholar, (Medline) PubMed, SID from 2000 to January 2021 are investigated and reviewed.
Conclusion: The function of the vestibular system can be affected by DM complications with or without symptoms (subclinical). Influence of the results of clinical tests in this disease in addition to characteristics and measurement parameters are also highly dependent on individual factors. A single result cannot be found for how the vestibular system works in these patients.
