Background and Aims: Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are characterized by characteristics such as impulsivity, distraction, and hyperactivity, and have been shown to be associated with sluggish cognitive tempo, according to research. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mentalization-based treatment (MBT) on sluggish cognitive tempo and clinical symptoms (symptoms) of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Materials and Methods: This study was a semi-experimental study with a experimental group and a control group in terms of the method of examining the research hypotheses, and as a pretest, posttest with follow-up. The statistical population in this study were 7- to 9-year-old students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder studying in normal schools in the six districts of Isfahan. To select the sample, 28 students were selected from the students who met the inclusion criteria and were divided into experimental (14) and control (14) groups. The research instruments were the Sluggish Cognitive Tempo Questionnaire (McBurnett et al., 2014) and the Connors Parent Form Questionnaire (Connors, 1998). The sessions of this treatment were 8 sessions of 60 minutes that were presented to the parents of the experimental group and were not provided to the educational control group. Before the intervention, after the end of the training and in the follow-up phase (one month after the post-test phase), the mentioned variables were measured again. After examining the assumptions of statistical tests, repeated measures analysis of variance was used. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21.
Results: The results showed that the main effect of time factor and group factor was significant for the variables of sluggish cognitive tempo scores and the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (P
