Background and Aims: People with hyperkyphosis have respiratory disorders and shortness of breath, which is associated with reduced oxygen supply and metabolic capacity of peripheral muscles and premature fatigue. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of corrective and aerobic exercises on aerobic performance of people with postural hyperkyphosis.
Materials and Methods: 32 women (30-55 years old) who had a kyphosis angle greater than 40 degrees were purposefully selected in Rasht city and randomly divided into 4 groups of eight people (control group, aerobic exercise group, corrective exercise group and combined aerobic and corrective exercises group). Aerobic and corrective exercises (included stretching, mobility and strength) were performed for 6 weeks. Before and after the intervention, the kyphosis angle was measured with a flexible ruler and aerobic performance was measured with the Bruce test. ANCOVA test was used to evaluate the effect of pre-test and the effect of training on the variables of the training group. Paired T-test was used to compare the average of research variables before and after the exercise protocol. Hypotheses testing was done at a significance level of p<0.05. SPSS software version 23 was used for data analysis.
Results: The results showed that corrective exercises (p=0.023), aerobic exercises (p=0.020) and their combination (p=0.002) had a significant effect on aerobic performance. Aerobic exercises (p=0.131) had no significant effect on the kyphosis angle, but corrective (p=0.001) and combined exercises (p=0.001) have a significant effect on reducing the kyphosis angle.
Conclusion: Aerobic exercises can restore lung capacity and improve body structure, which together with corrective exercises. It also has a double effect in improving the kyphosis angle. According to the obtained results, it seems that the corrective and aerobic exercises used in this research are effective and can be used to improve the kyphosis angle and aerobic performance.
