Abstract
Background and Aim: Dominance has been defined as any sort of priority, or preference by one member of any bilateral pair of structure in the body, such as hands, legs, and cerebral hemispheres. Dominant eye is the one that is primarily relied on for precise positional information. This may be particularly important in sports which require aim, such as Archery. This study aimed to determine the relationship between dominance congruence and archery routine (binocular or monocular aiming) and the effect of routine(binocular or monocular aiming) in sports performance.
Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was performed in Farabi Eye Hospital in Tehran (Iran). Due to the limited number of the federation members, all federation members were invited to take part in the research. Athletes divided into elite and non elite group based on the titles and medals. Miles method was applied to evaluate the dominant eye. The chi-square test was used to determine relationship between dominance congruence and archery routine and the effect of routine in sports performance.
Results: Finally, we were able to evaluate 57 archers. There was significant relationship between dominance congruence and binocular aiming (p < 0.01) and also binocular aiming and sports performance (P < 0.05) Hence archers with dominance congruence have a greater chance of binocular aiming and better performance.
Conclusion: dominance congruence has benefits for athletes in this sport and increases the chance of aiming in binocular way. Dominant eye examination is taken into consideration in many studies but less attention has been paid to dominance congruence that can help guide an athlete towards better performance.
