Abstract

Abstract

Background and Aims: Muscle strength is one of the main factors in athletic success and injury prevention as well as optimal rehabilitation for the injured athlete. Also, symmetry of muscle strength ratio is very important to maintain force-producing torques. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare hip muscle imbalances in soccer athletes and normal individuals.

Materials and Methods: Fifteen soccer players and 15 normal healthy individuals volunteered for the study, and flexor, extensor, abductor, adductor, internal and external rotator cuff strengths were assessed using a hand-held strength measure.

Results: The results of the present study showed that there was a significant difference between the ratio of extensor to flexor muscle strength, adductor to abductor and internal to external rotation of the superior and non-superior leg (P <0.05).

Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, it seems that the nature of football in using more of the superior leg can lead to an imbalance in the ratio of strength of the pro and opposite muscles in the hip joint between the two superior and non-superior limbs. Therefore, the same use of both lower limbs, along with regular screenings and correction exercises to effectively prevent muscle imbalance is recommended for athletes, therapists and coaches.
