Abstract

Background and Aim: Volleyball is a team sport that requires high physical and perceptual-cognitive fitness, therefore, during the competition, an increase in the feeling of physical and mental fatigue is observed among the players. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating and comparing the effect of mindfulness and music exercises on physical and mental fatigue in elite volleyball athletes.

Materials and Methods: In this semi-experimental study, 29 elite volleyball athletes were randomly divided into mindfulness-based exercise groups, music-based exercise groups, and a control group. Fasting conditions were collected in pre-test and post-test stages. Data analysis was done using multiple analyses of variance (MANOVA), dependent t-test with significance level (P ≤ 0.05) and Benferroni's post-hoc test was used to determine the location of intra-group and inter-group differences. SPSS software version 26 was used for these calculations.

Results: In the inter-group comparison of the effect of mindfulness and music at a significant level (P ≤ 0.05), no significant difference was observed on physical fatigue. In the inter-group comparison of the effect of mindfulness and music on the change of the inflammatory factors of lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase and C-reactive protein, no significant difference was seen at the significance level (P ≤ 0.05). In the comparison between groups, the effect of mindfulness and music on mental fatigue was significant (P ≤ 0.05) and it showed that mindfulness has a significant effect on mental fatigue and reduces its level.

Conclusion: The results of this research showed that there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of mindfulness-based exercise and music in the field of physical fatigue and changes in the serum levels of lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, and C-reactive protein, and only in the field of mental fatigue, exercise based on Mindfulness was able to show a significant difference that led to the reduction of mental fatigue after the test.
