A survey on communication skills of undergraduate student of shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences، Faculty of Rehabilitation in in the academic year 2011-2012

Abstract

Background and Aim: Communication are described as a major feature for people working in primary health care these skill is a key component of the clinical competencies and is helpful for patient adherence. The purpose of this research was to assess communication skills of undergraduate student of shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences ،Faculty of Rehabilitation in in the academic year 2011-2012
Materials and Methods: in this cross-sectional study a questionnaire were used that was written base on the method of Calgary - Cambridge and had modified for Persian culture and language. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy professors answered this questionnaire base on their observation and evaluation of their student while communication with their patients.
The population of this study was 89 undergraduate students from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences، Faculty of Rehabilitation in the academic year 2011-2012 that was in 6-8 semesters. 53 students were studying occupational therapy and 36 students were studying physiotherapy.
Results: The results show that most of the students were gained average score in the communication skills questionnaire and there was no significant difference between physiotherapy student and occupational therapy students.
Conclusion: Considering the obtained results, it can be said that communication skills of rehabilitation students is deficient and considering the importance of such skills, necessity of their education in clinical settings before contacting real clients is revealed.
