Content and face validity of Pediatric Balance Scale in children with spastic cerebral palsy

Abstract

Background and Aimes: Children with spastic cerebral palsy have difficulties with balance and movement. Balance is a crucial factor of movement that facilitates functional skills. The purpose of the present study was to translate and to evaluate face and content validity of Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS).
Materials and Methods: In the current descriptive-analytical study, psychometric methods were assessed. Translation of this scale was accomplished in forward-backward process. Next, face validity was checked by 10 occupational therapists and content validity was evaluated by 10 other occupational therapists. Moreover, Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) were determined.
Results: In translation process, one item was changed because it was confusing for occupational therapists. Face validity was obtained to be very high for this measure (2/87-4/70). Also, CVR (1- 0.73) and CVI (0.96) were in the acceptable range.
Conclusion: PBS has high face and content validity which is appropriate for assessing functional balance in children with spastic cerebral palsy.
