Prevalence and Associated Factors of Musculoskeletal Disorders among Staff at Farhangian University of Arak

Abstract

Background and Objectives:: Musculoskeletal disorders related to work are injuries or disorders of muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage and spinal disc, which are the result of the work environment and the performance of people at work. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort, pain and its relationship with the demographic and occupational information of the administrative staff of Arak Farhangian University.

Maerial and methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 100 office workers (64% men and 36% women) of Arak Farhangian University with an average age of 42.81 years and an average weight of 75.95 kg were included in the research. Nordic Questionnaire (NMQ) was used to collect data and visual analog scale was used to measure pain. Subsequently, a conceptual model was introduced illustrating the interaction of demographic and occupational variables that leads to the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in specific body regions. To analyze the data, frequency, mean, standard deviation and covariance index were used.

Results: The most musculoskeletal disorders were related to the back (42%), shoulder (40%), back and neck (36% each). Back discomfort had a significant relationship with age, gender, organizational position and computer use. Shoulder discomfort had a significant relationship with age, weight, work experience and computer use. Back discomfort with age and organizational position factors and neck discomfort also had a significant relationship with age, height and computer use.

Conclusion: Appropriate employment of employees in work positions and also training to maintain correct physical posture while working are among the measures that can be effective in preventing and improving musculoskeletal pain and It is recommended to have a sports and physiotherapy program at work to reduce sitting time and increase daily physical activity of employees and reduce clinical pain.
