Abstract
Background and Aims: Low back pain is a prevalent issue within the rowing community, often reported as a common complaint. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to examine the impact of a specific training program on pain levels and the relative lumbosacral angle in professional rowers who are prone to low back pain.
Materials and Methods: The present study is a quasi-experimental research design utilizing a pretest-posttest framework. It consists of an experimental group undergoing a selected set of designed exercises (n = 15) and a control group (n = 15). Pain levels were assessed using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), while joint angles were measured with three wearable IMU sensors developed by BSNlab.com. For data analysis, repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Bonferroni post hoc tests were conducted, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Statistical calculations and graphical representations were performed using SPSS version 27 and Excel 2019 software.
Results: The results of the study indicated that there were no significant differences in pain levels and lumbosacral angles between the experimental and control groups at the pre-test stage (P ≥ 0.05). However, the findings revealed that the selected exercise program implemented in the experimental group led to a significant reduction in pain and an increase in the lumbosacral angle (P = 0.001). In contrast, these changes were not observed to be significant in the control group (P ≥ 0.05).
Conclusion: The results of the present study demonstrated that the designed exercises not only contributed to a reduction in pain among the rowers but also led to an increase in the lumbosacral angle. These findings highlight the significance of targeted training interventions in the management and enhancement of low back pain in athletes. Furthermore, they suggest that by improving motor control and biomechanical alignment, the risk of future injuries can be mitigated, ultimately enhancing athletic performance.
