Abstract
Background and Aims: Exercise and antioxidant supplementation may effectively mitigate the inflammatory complications associated with obesity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of eight weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resveratrol supplementation on serum levels of adiponectin, lipocalin-2, interleukin-10 (IL-10), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in inactive, obese, middle-aged women.
Materials and Methods: Forty inactive, obese, middle-aged women (BMI 30–40 kg/m²; no regular exercise in the previous six months) were recruited and randomly assigned to four equal groups (n=10 each): exercise (HIIT), supplement + exercise (HIIT+RES), supplement (RES), and control. The HIIT groups followed an interval training protocol three times weekly for eight weeks. The supplement groups consumed 250 mg of resveratrol daily on an empty stomach. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc tests, with significance set at P≤0.05.
Results: Post-test results showed that serum levels of adiponectin and IL-10 significantly increased in the HIIT (p<0.001), HIIT+RES (p<0.001), and RES (p=0.041 and p<0.001, respectively) groups compared to pre-test values. Serum lipocalin-2 and CRP significantly decreased in the HIIT (p<0.001) and HIIT+RES (p<0.001) groups; however, in the RES group, only CRP showed a significant decrease (p=0.029). Post-test adiponectin and IL-10 levels were significantly higher in the HIIT and HIIT+RES groups compared to the control (p<0.001), and in the HIIT+RES group compared to the RES group (p<0.001). No significant differences were observed between the HIIT+RES and HIIT-only groups (p=0.167 and p=0.245, respectively). Furthermore, post-test lipocalin-2 and CRP levels were significantly lower in the HIIT+RES and RES groups compared to the control (p<0.001 and p=0.041, respectively), and lower in the HIIT+RES group compared to both the HIIT (p<0.001, p=0.017) and RES (p<0.001, p=0.020) groups.
Conclusion: HIIT significantly improved the anti-inflammatory profile by increasing adiponectin and IL-10 and decreasing CRP. While 250 mg of resveratrol significantly reduced CRP, it had no significant effect on other markers, likely due to the relatively low dosage administered.
