Background and Aims: Alzheimer's disease is a common neurological disorder that begins in the early stages with mild memory loss and progresses to severe impairment of extensive executive and cognitive functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy on the working memory of Alzheimer's patients.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test, 30 Alzheimer's patients referred to neurology clinics in Yazd city were selected as available in the age range of 55 to 75 years, of which 15 In the intervention group and 15 people in the control group. Active memory test scores were compared by computer n-back test, both in terms of response time and percentage of correct response, in two time intervals before treatment and after treatment. In the control group, each patient received 10 sessions of repetitive structural magnetic stimulation of the brain from the skull (20 minutes) and in the experimental group, 10 sessions of repetitive magnetic stimulation of the brain from the skull (20 minutes) at a frequency of 10 Hz in the left lateral dorsal forehead cortex. Data analysis was performed using analysis of covariance.
Results: Data analysis showed that the working memory test scores in Alzheimer's patients both in terms of response time and percentage of correct response in the intervention group and after receiving repeated magnetic stimulation of the brain compared with the control group with repeated magnetic stimulation of the mock brain, respectively. Decreased and increased significantly (p-value = 0.001), respectively.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it seems that repeattiveTranscranial Magnetic Stimulation of the brain from the skull in the lateral dorsal prefrontal cortex improves the ability of working memory in Alzheimer's patients.
