Background and Aims: Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common entrapments of the peripheral nerve that occurs due to compression or involvement of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of selected corrective exercises and massage on grip strength, increased range of motion, and wrist pain in karate women with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Materials and Methods: The current study was applied and semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design. which was done on 30 karate kai women aged 25 to 45 with carpal tunnel syndrome. Karate athletes were placed in two experimental and control groups of 15 people. In addition to the massage program, the experimental group performed stretching and strength exercises under the supervision of a corrective movement specialist for 8 weeks and 2 sessions per week. The control group only performed their gym exercises with supervision and did not perform any other intervention. Tinel, Falen, and pressure tests were used under the supervision of a neurologist to check for carpal tunnel. Pain intensity was measured with a visual pain scale and hand grip strength using a hand-held dynamometer and to measure the range of motion in 4 movements of pronation, supination, abduction, and adduction with a universal goniometer as a pre-test and post-test of both groups. To analyze the results, a covariance statistical test was used at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: The results of the present study showed that the combined program of selected corrective exercises with massage causes a significant decrease in pain intensity, increase in grip strength and increase in range of motion in women with carpal tunnel syndrome compared to the control group. (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, using the program of selected corrective exercises and massage in a combined manner reduces the pain intensity, increases the grip strength, and increases the range of motion of the wrist. Therefore, therapists and sports trainers are advised to use a combined program to improve the carpal tunnel of athletes.
