Background and Aime: The aim of this research was to compare the intensity and duration of firing eight muscles (tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gluteus medius and erector spinae) during 300 milliseconds of walking between individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and healthy subjects.
Materials and Methods: This was a causal comparative study. The participants of this research include 46 football and volleyball athletes, with at least 3 years of experience in sports activities, who were divided into two groups of individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) with an average age of 24.39±7.17 years and at least six months after their anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and 23 healthy individuals with an average age of 25.09±7.28 years. Electrical activity of tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, vastus medialis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, gluteus medius and erector spinae muscles by means of an 8-channel electromyography device in two phases 100 milliseconds before heel strike (in the swing phase) and 200 Milliseconds after heel strike (in stance phase) were evaluated during walking.
Results: The results of the research showed that the intensity and duration of firing in all eight examined muscles, decreased on average 9 months after the anterior cruciate ligament compared to healthy subjects. But this decrease in the vastus medialis muscle was significant in both intensity and duration, and also was observed a significant decrease in firing duration in the erector spinae and rectus abdominis muscles. For data analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used to check the normality and Levene's test to check the homogeneity of the data. After determining the normality of the distribution and the homogeneity of the data, the Independent T-test was used to compare the two groups.
Conclusion: The results of the research showed that it is better to rehabilitation programs in addition to focusing on improving the contraction intensity and timing of the muscles of the lower limbs, especially the vastus medialis muscle, specialists should also pay special attention to the core muscles, including the abdominal muscles and erector spinae.
