Background and Aims: Due to the importance of proprioception and pain factors in determining the quality of life and independence performance of individuals with knee osteoarthritis, the purpose of this study is to assess the effect of water-based neuromuscular exercises on knee joint proprioception and pain in women with second and third knee osteoarthritis.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 24 older women with second- and third-degree knee osteoarthritis participated. To evaluate the amount of proprioception changes in the knee joint and pain before and after the neuromuscular training protocol in water, digital photography and the first section of the Knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score questionnaire were utilized. The data were analyzed using mixed repeated measure ANOVA.
Results: The present results indicated that in both studied groups in the variables of proprioception and pain (grade two: proprioception (p=0.001) and pain (p=0.044), grade three: proprioception (p=0.018) and pain (p=0.001) showed a significant difference from the pre-test to the post-test. However, the between group results showed no significant difference between the second and third grade OA.
Conclusion: It can be concluded that using of eight weeks neuromuscular exercise routine in an aquatic environment may have a positive impact on enhancing knee joint proprioceptive variables and reducing pain among individuals diagnosed with second- and third-grade knee osteoarthritis. So suggested that to improve knee joint proprioception and pain in elderly women with knee OA, use neuromuscular exercises for more weeks and at greater difficulty levels.
