Introduction and aim: Proprioception deficit is one of prominent problem after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. These factors play important role in the normal weight distribution on the lower limbs and normal gait. The present study investigated short and medium-term effects of Kinesiotaping on the proprioception in individuals undergoing ACL reconstruction.
Material and Method: In this quasi-experimental study, 20 male athletes with an average age of 27 ± 5.2 years, after 4 to 6 month of ruptured ACL and after ACL reconstruction participated. Patients were randomly divided into two groups of 10 people with Kinesiotaping (study group) and without it (control group). Proprioception was evaluated as active and passive angle reconstruction error at 45 degree flexion by digital goniometer. This process was repeated before and after Kinesiotaping application, after walking on a treadmill, and after a 10-day treatment period with Kinesiotaping. The data were analyzed using independent t-test and Repeated measures ANOVA at a significance level of less than 0.05.
Result: The Kinesiotype group had a significant reduction of joint angle reconstruction error in both active and inactive angle reconstruction conditions. Also, 10-day use of Kinesiotype improved proprioception in active angle reconstruction condition.
Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that of Kinesiotaping application can improve knee joint proprioception due to recruitment of more sensory inputs
