Background and Aims: The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of dual-task and aerobic exercises on cognitive function in women with multiple sclerosis.
Materials and Methods: The study's statistical population consisted of individuals with MS in Tehran province. Thirty women with MS were purposefully selected based on inclusion criteria and completed the Mini-Mental state Exmination and Expanded Disability Status Scale . They were then randomly assigned to either a dual-task exercise group or a rhythmic aerobic exercise group. Each group participated in 8 weeks of exercise, with 3 sessions lasting 60 minutes per week. Pre-test and post-test assessments included the Stroop test and the N-Back test to evaluate cognitive function, utilizing the computer version of the Sina Institute of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences.
Results: Analysis of covariance revealed a significant difference between the two groups in working memory and response inhibition variables in the post-test after adjusting for pre-test scores (p<0.05). This suggests that aerobic exercise had a greater impact on working memory and response inhibition in women with MS compared to dual-task exercise.
Conclusion: Exercise programs for MS patients should incorporate both motor and cognitive interventions to enhance cognitive functions alongside physical improvements. Specifically, rhythmic aerobic interventions can be beneficial in enhancing cognitive function in these patients
