Background and Aims: Age-related hearing loss, by impairing communication skills, can accelerate the onset of cognitive problems in the elderly. This study aimed to investigate the link between hearing loss and cognitive decline and to evaluate the role of rehabilitation interventions in this area.
Materials and Methods: In this review, articles published in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases between 2000 and 2026 were searched and reviewed using relevant keywords.
Results: The findings show that the consequences of hearing loss in the elderly go beyond reduced sound perception and also affect various aspects of life, including social relationships, self-esteem, and motor skills, and are an independent risk factor for developing cognitive disorders. Also, timely rehabilitation of hearing loss and the use of hearing aids can significantly reduce the risk of cognitive problems.
Conclusion: The study of neural mechanisms shows that hearing loss plays a direct role in the occurrence and progression of cognitive impairments in old age by causing structural changes in the brain and increasing processing load. Therefore, early diagnosis, intervention, and rehabilitation are essential to maintain brain function and reduce the socio-economic burden of dementia in the elderly.
