Background and Aims: Raising a child with profound hearing loss who uses a cochlear implant can be associated with considerable psychological stress for parents, especially mothers, and may affect their general health. In this context, spiritual intelligence—as a dimension of human health that promotes greater adaptation and higher quality of life—appears to play a key role in promoting the general health of these mothers. However, empirical evidence regarding its relationship with general health in mothers of children with cochlear implants remains limited. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the association between spiritual intelligence and general health in this population.
Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The research population comprised mothers of hearing impaired children attending rehabilitation centers in Tehran, Iran. Participants were selected using convenience sampling from eligible individuals based on predefined inclusion criteria. A total of 24 mothers completed the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ; Goldberg & Hillier, 1972) and the Spiritual Intelligence Questionnaire (Badie et al., 2010). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27, employing descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation analysis.
Results: The results showed a significant correlation between spiritual intelligence and general health in mothers of children with cochlear implants (rₛ = –0.791, p < 0.001). Mothers with higher spiritual intelligence scores exhibited more favorable general health status.
Conclusion: Given that higher levels of spiritual intelligence are associated with better general health in these mothers, enhancing spiritual intelligence may play an effective role in maintaining and improving their general health. Therefore, it is recommended that strategies aimed at increasing spiritual intelligence be incorporated into counseling and supportive interventions for these families.
