Abstract
Background and Aims: Taekwondo demands high levels of static and dynamic balance and core muscular endurance for the precise execution of techniques. Trunk functional impairment can disrupt balance control and increase the risk of injury. This study examined the effect of an 8-week core stability training program on static balance, dynamic balance, and core muscular endurance in taekwondo athletes with trunk functional impairment.
Materials and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental applied study with a pretest-posttest design and a control group.Twenty-nine male taekwondo athletes (aged 18–25 years) with trunk functional impairment, identified by the Tuck Jump Assessment, were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 14) or a control group (n = 15). The experimental group performed an 8-week progressive core stability training program (three sessions per week, 45–60 minutes each), while the control group continued regular training. Static balance was assessed with the Stork Balance Test, dynamic balance with the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), and core muscular endurance with McGill's field tests (60° trunk flexion, Biering-Sørensen, right and left side bridge). Normality (Shapiro-Wilk) and homogeneity of variance (Levene's test) were confirmed (P > 0.05 for all variables). A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA (2 × 2) was used for data analysis (P < 0.05).
Results: Core stability training produced significant improvements in all outcome variables. Static balance improved significantly (group × time interaction: F = 51.86, P = 0.001, ES = 0.65; pre: 7.50 ± 2.59 vs. post: 10.07 ± 3.12 s). Dynamic balance also improved (F = 99.67, P = 0.001, ES = 0.78; pre: 87.83 ± 7.01 vs. post: 91.31 ± 7.11%). Core muscular endurance showed the largest improvements: overall trunk muscle endurance (F = 275.21, P = 0.001, ES = 0.91; pre: 119.51 ± 27.45 vs. post: 177.25 ± 37.58 s), trunk flexion (F = 188.50, P = 0.001, ES = 0.87), Sorensen (F = 111.86, P = 0.001, ES = 0.80), right side bridge (F = 181.57, P = 0.001, ES = 0.87), and left side bridge (F = 232.88, P = 0.001, ES = 0.89). The control group showed no significant changes in any variable.
Conclusion: Targeted core stability exercises are an effective intervention for simultaneously improving core muscular endurance, static balance, and dynamic balance in taekwondo athletes with trunk functional impairment. Enhanced core endurance appears to underlie balance improvements and may consequently support more precise technical execution. Incorporating these exercises into conditioning programs is recommended for enhancing physical preparedness and reducing injury risk in this population.
