Abstract
Background and Aims: Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation (RAS) is an effective rehabilitative intervention for improving gait function in patients with motor impairments. Individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) often suffer balance disorders, muscle weakness, and abnormalities in gait parameters. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of RAS on the spatial-temporal characteristics of gait and the gait symmetry index in individuals with Down Syndrome.
Materials and Methods: Twenty male and female participants with Down Syndrome (mean age 23.5 ± 5.8 years) were selected from the Down Syndrome Association to participate in this study. Participants walked a specified path three times under two conditions (without RAS and with RAS) that was recorded using a six-camera motion analysis system at 200 Hz. After data processing with Cortex software, spatial-temporal gait parameters (Gait speed, Cadence, Swing time, Step time, Stance time, Step width, Stride length, Double support time) were extracted and evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS softwarepaired samples t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test at a significance level of (p ≤ 0.05).
Results: Rhythmic auditory stimulation resulted in significant improvements in several temporal gait parameters, including gait speed, cadence, swing time, and gait symmetry significantly increased, whereas step time and stance time significantly decreased. (p < 0.05). However, no significant changes were observed in step width or double support time (p > 0.05). These findings indicate that rhythmic auditory stimulation primarily affects temporal gait organization and symmetry rather than mediolateral stability-related parameters.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that rhythmic auditory stimulation may serve as a simple and clinically applicable adjunct to conventional gait rehabilitation for individuals with Down syndrome by improving selected temporal gait parameters and gait symmetry. However, because the present study evaluated only the immediate effects of a single intervention session and did not include a control group, the findings should be interpreted with caution. Further randomized controlled studies with larger sample sizes and longer intervention periods are required to confirm these results.
