Background and Aims: Physical factors and the design of appropriate rehabilitation environments can be effective in the quality of rehabilitation treatment. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of physical factors and the design of spaces in rehabilitation clinics on the treatment process of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, 50 parents of children with ASD were evaluated. The short form of sensory profile 2 questionnaire was used to determine sensory processing abilities (including items of sensory seeking, sensory avoidance, sensory sensitivity and sensory registration) of children with ASD between the ages of 3 and 14. T-test was used to check the effect of environmental design and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to check the relationship between variables.
Results: The results showed that the design of suitable rehabilitation space had a significant positive effect on all four sensory processing patterns including sensory-seeking, sensory-avoidance, sensory-sensitivity and sensory-recording (P˂0.05) in children with ASD.
Conclusion: The results of this research showed that the quality of architectural design of therapeutic environments has a significant effect on children's sensory processing patterns and the treatment process of children with ASD. Based on the results, it can be stated that the role of the architecture of the rehabilitation environment for children with ASD has a positive and significant effect on the quality of providing rehabilitation services. Therefore, the findings of the present study can be used for the standardization of rehabilitation spaces as well as the formulation of the national architectural standard.
